Canterbury Woods Swim & Tennis Club 2012 Newsletter will be posted in April. For your reference, last year's 2011 Newsletter
The CWSC Board welcomes you to the 2011 swim and tennis season!
We are excited about the 2011 swim and tennis season, the social events that are planned for the enjoyment of all members, and all of the facility improvements that are planned for this year. Volunteers are needed to help organize the social events and we hope you will contact our new social director, Rachel Ebbesen, to lend your ideas and assistance. Please contact Rachel at rachel@ebbesens.com to volunteer a few hours to make our social activities a reality. Our pool is only as much fun as you help to make it happen!
The Board wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to three individuals who devoted countless hours over many years to making our pool community a better place. Jane Millward’s fifteen years as the CW Swim Team Rep culminated in both Division 11 and Relay Carnival Championships. The CWSC extends a sincere thank you to Jane for her dedication and hard work for the C-Serpents over these many years! And special thanks are offered to Ken Buell for his four years of service as the CWSC Pool Board President and to Nicki Buell for her tenure as the Social Director. Ken and Nicki worked extremely hard and brought new life and fun to our pool community. Thanks, Ken and Nicki!
Bill and Liz Brocato will take over the Swim Team Representative role, while David Shen has agreed to return as head coach of our Division 8 swim team. We look forward to seeing everyone at the pool this summer! We are planning a variety of social events for families, children and adults that will make it fun for everyone! Hooray – summer is almost here!
Please note a new section in our newsletter – common misunderstandings of our pool’s regulations. The complete set of Operating Rules and Regulations are posted at the pool, on the web site at www.cwpool.org, and copies are available at the guard’s office. We urge all members to familiarize themselves with these rules and regulations and for parents to discuss them with their children. CWSC on the Web Look for club-related announcements concerning social activities and swim team happenings on our Facebook group page. In addition, the club maintains a web site located at www.cwpool.org. A digital copy of this newsletter will be available on the web site for easy reference, along with other interesting and updated information.

The 2011-2012 board will consist of nine members. The pool membership will elect three for the class of 2014, two for the class of 2013, and three for the class of 2012. Elections will be held on Sunday, September 11, 4-6 pm. Board meetings are held each month except December. Time commitment, depending on the position held, is about 3 -4 hours per month. This is a great opportunity to affect the direction of the pool and also serve your community! For more information, please contact Jane Millward, at lovetoteachkids@hotmail.com.
Annual Membership Meeting The annual Membership Meeting was held on March 15th at Braddock Hall. Treasurer Bill Brocato presented the 2011 operating budget, but there were not enough assembled members to reach a quorum in order to approve the budget. We have included a copy of the proposed budget for the season in this newsletter for your review and approval. The ballot is included on the registration form. If you have any questions about the budget, please contact Bill at 703-323-0587.
Pool Maintenance Atlantic Pool Service will continue to maintain and operate our pool this season. Our pool is in good material condition, and there are only a few routine repairs needed to open the pool. The Board is focusing this year on cosmetic upgrades and repairs to the pool, bath house and grounds. Landscaping, parking lot improvements, and selective tree removal are in the planning for this year and projects for bath house improvement will be implemented.
Please plan to join us on Saturday, May 7th for our annual Community Spring Cleaning of the bath house and grounds. This is a wonderful opportunity for children in search of community service hours. We will begin working at 9 a.m. and continue until the work is complete. We will supply drinks and snacks, as well as paint, brushes, gardening shears, rakes and other equipment for all participants.
Membership Information In an effort to update our pool database, we ask that all members please complete and return this year’s registration form located at the back of the newsletter. The preferred emergency contact will be a non-family member who is in a position to assist should an occasion arise needing immediate attention at the pool. The listing of family emergency contacts is maintained at the guard office and will be used only when an immediate family member cannot be reached. Many members send in payments without the form, not realizing that their email addresses have changed, for example. With updated and accurate email addresses for our membership, we intend to increase targeted communications relating to the club’s social activities, tennis program, triathlon, and swim team. For those members who do not have ready access to email or Internet, we will continue to post notices of upcoming events at the pool.
We also plan to reissue membership bond certificates this year, as many of the original bonds issued back in the 60’s have been reclaimed due to delinquency. Your membership number is the three-digit code on the newsletter mailing label, and for most is also your bond number. The Board is aware of the continuing issues at the club gate and is addressing these concerns with the pool management company, along with detailed instructions for the lifeguards on operating rules.
Membership Dues After assessing budget estimates for pool operations, maintenance and capital fund requirements, your Board presents the below fee structure for the 2011 season. • Early Payment Discounted Fee: $400 (if postmarked by April 22, 2011) • Annual Membership Dues: $425 (if received before opening day, May 28, 2011) • Late payment (after May 28): $450 (includes $25 late fee) • Summer membership: $450 (non bond holders) • Inactive status: $50
Guest Passes Each bondholder family receives 10 complimentary guest passes, if full payment is received before May 28, 2011. Each family’s Guest Pass allotment is maintained at the front gate. You must notify the guards in the pool office when you wish to use one of your guest passes. Guest fees for the 2011 season: • Pre-planned parties or events: $2.50 / non-pool member • Daily usage fee: $5.00 / visit • If you have family members that visit for several weeks during the summer, please contact the Membership Chairman to make arrangements for pool usage during their visit.
New Members There is no waiting list for new members - we'd love to have you join us. In addition to the annual membership dues, there is a one-time fee of $250 to purchase a membership bond. The membership bond can be transferred or sold privately, as long as a $10 transfer fee is paid to the club and the bond is in good standing. The club maintains a “sell list” that new members may request if you wish to negotiate a bond purchase privately. Please contact Membership to obtain a copy of the sell list. Arrangements can also be made to purchase a bond from the club by installment.
Summer Membership For one season only, a summer membership is available for non-bond holders. The summer membership fee is $450. This limited membership is intended for families new to the neighborhood who wish to “try us out.” However, our club’s membership philosophy is that families wishing to use the pool for more than one season shall purchase a bond and become fully vested members of the club. Special exceptions can be arranged for short-term families who know their stay in the D.C. area will be limited to 2-3 years. Please contact Membership to discuss your situation.
Renters If your owner has a bond, renters in the neighborhood can pay the active membership dues of $425 (prior to May 28th), and are also eligible for the discounted fee if payment is made by April 22nd. Renters must complete the 2011 Pool Registration Form and submit to the Membership Chairman, indicating the name of the homeowner and bond number (if known).
Inactive Membership If you hold a membership bond with CWSC and do not plan to use the pool facilities this season, Inactive Status for the 2011 season must be requested in writing to the Board of Directors, along with the inactive fee of $50. You may use the registration form in this newsletter to make this request. The address is: Canterbury Woods Swim Club P.O. Box 1038 Springfield, VA 22151
The Board uses members’ inactive fees as a contribution to the capital improvement fund and to keep the pool in good operating condition. It is important for bond holders to keep their accounts in good standing for when the time comes to sell the membership, as a delinquent bond cannot be transferred.
Want To Sell Your Membership? You are free to sell your membership bond in any manner you choose. You are responsible for paying membership fees or inactive dues as long as you are the registered owner of the membership bond. You must pay a $10 transfer fee and all delinquent fees, if any, before the purchaser will be allowed to assume ownership of the bond and use the facilities. The Membership Chairman maintains a "sell list" for those who wish to sell their bond. Please contact Membership for placement on, or a copy of, this list. If you have any membership questions, contact Alan Peterson at (703) 426-8535, or by e-mail at afpistol@verizon.net.
2011 Swim Team - C-Serpents The NVSL Division 8 C-Serpents will kick off the season with a team sign-up (including DONUTS!) on Saturday, May 21st from 9:00-11:00 am at Canterbury Woods Pool. Interested swimmers of all abilities and their parents are invited to attend. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about our great team, meet the coaches, and socialize with the other swimmers. Our team suits will be available for purchase at the breakfast. Swimmers age six and under should come to learn about our Super Team. The ability to swim the width of the diving well is a prerequisite for participating on the Super Team.
Swim practice will begin on Tuesday, May 31st . Ages 10 and under will practice from 5:00-6:00 pm. Ages 11 and older will practice from 6:00-7:00 pm. Morning practices will begin when school is out: 8:00 am for the older group; 9:00 am for the younger group, and 10:00 am for Super Team members. Evening practices will be held from 6:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for those swimmers who have legitimate conflicts with morning practice times. Social events will be held Friday evenings before all A meets. Volunteers are needed to keep our swim team functioning. At home meets, we need to fill at least 31 positions on the deck. If your child is on the team, you should plan on working in some capacity. We are all volunteers…and together we all form a team! Questions? Call our Swim Team Representatives: Liz & Bill Brocato, brocatofam@cox.net or 703-323-0587.

This is a joint effort put together by Somerset-Olde Creek, Rutherford and Canterbury Woods pools. Fun for the whole family! We will have a variety of distances for kids and adults. Individual and team entries accepted. Participate on any or all of the following dates: Canterbury Woods July 10 Somerset-Olde Creek TBD Rutherford TBD
For more information, please contact Sally Milian at milianfive@gmail.com.
2011 Tennis Program Steve Nurre, our tennis coordinator, will provide one key per household on request. He can be reached at (703) 426-8004 or sgnurre@gmail.com. Please look for informational flyers at the pool announcing tennis lessons, instructors and tournaments. Last year we didn’t have any demand for lessons for older children. We’ll plan on having lessons for younger kids, 6-8 years old. We’ll consider having activities for older kids. The courts need some work this year. We’re planning on getting the courts cleaned, nets replaced, and fencing repaired. We’ve had some difficulties with keys not working in the locks. If yours doesn’t work, please contact Steve. Please remember to relock the gates after play. The pool office will have two keys for members to use. Enjoy the tennis courts this season.
Social Rachel Ebbesen has volunteered to head our social committee this year. She will be following the program that Nicki developed, but will need your help and support to keep it active and fun. If you want to help out with a wine down or party, please contact Rachel at 703-362-2277(c) or 703-978-3554(h). Volunteers and their families can partake at no charge.
Raft Night (Thursday evenings beginning June 23rd, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm) Look for notices indicating dates for Raft Night dinners. Many families appreciated having dinner cooked for them and we hope to be able to do more this year. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Rachel.

The dates are available on a first come, first serve basis. The guidelines for scheduling a private party are as follows: • Private parties may use the pavilion and grills Monday through Wednesday day and evening. • The pavilion and grills can be used on Thursday and Friday during the day only. (The pavilion and grills are not available in the evenings due to Raft Nights and Swim Team Pep Rallies.) • When swim team season is over the pavilion will be available on Friday evenings. • The pavilion may not be used for private parties on the weekends. • For weekend parties, there is a canopy available that the host or hostess can easily be set up in the grassy area outside the pool deck. Please request it from the guard on duty when you arrive. • The host or hostess of the party is responsible for payment of non-members that will be attending their party, prior to the party. • The host or hostess of the party is responsible for setting up before, and cleaning up after, the party. We hope you enjoy your parties! These guidelines are in place to ensure the pool will be an enjoyable place for all members.
Operating Rules and Regulations Among the most common misunderstandings regarding pool rules are the following:
• Admission to the club shall only be granted by the lifeguard staff after verifying the member’s good standing against the membership list maintained at the front entrance. • Food is only to be consumed in the pavilion area and on the grassy areas inside the pool fence. • Smoking is permitted only in the grassy area inside the pool fence. • Consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited, except at authorized and sponsored pool board events. • Children under the age of 16 years old are not allowed in the pool during break periods (this also means that kids are not allowed to sit on the side of the pool with their feet in the water, even at the shallow end steps). • Only one person is permitted on the diving board or ladder at a time, and only one bounce is permitted per dive.
